A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named Peggy has been installed at the Airport Terminal, marking a major breakthrough for the Western Sydney Airport project.
The 1,066-ton Peggy successfully completed the first journey to the Aerotropolis area, followed by TBM Eileen, the machine that opened the historic breakthrough last July.
Super machine Peggy operates at maximum capacity at a speed of 120 meters per week to build a 1.26 km long tunnel, excavating about 112,000 tons of rock – enough to fill 18 Olympic swimming pools.
Before Peggy’s arrival, about 293,000 tons of rock (equivalent to 48 Olympic swimming pools) were moved out from the airport terminal pit at a depth of 25m.
It is expected that Peggy will pass through the terminal box before being restarted, moving into the tunnel under the (future) Western Sydney International Airport, following which the TBM is expected to arrive at the Aerotropolis Station site in 2024.
TBM Peggy is named after Peggy Kelman OAM, an Australian explorer and aviation pioneer. A total of four TBMs will construct two parallel 9.8km tunnels for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line between St Marys and Aerotropolis.

The route will operate when Western Sydney International Airport opens to passengers, with an estimated travel time of 15 minutes from St Marys Metro Station to Airport Terminal and a further five minutes to Aerotropolis Station.
