(MAP) On December 11, the Australian Government announced it would tighten visas for international students and low-skilled workers, aiming to reduce the number of immigrants by half in the next two years.

The official figure that the Australian Government wants is 250,000 people – which is equal to the level before the Covid pandemic broke out.
This decision to reform the immigration system was made when Australia is facing a record increase in the number of net immigrants to 510,000 in 2022 – 2023, putting heavy pressure on infrastructure and housing supply. But Australia still lacks skilled workers and the country is still struggling to recruit.
At a press conference this Monday, Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil announced comprehensive immigration system reform that will “control” and reduce the number of immigrants by 50%.
Currently Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government will establish a new specialist visa for highly skilled professionals, aiming to improve Australia’s competitiveness with other economies and build high-quality human resources.
In addition, strengthen strict control of regulations related to international students. Accordingly, there is a higher minimum English proficiency requirement for international students and careful supervision in the issuance of second visas. Furthermore, international students must also demonstrate clear aspirations for graduate study. Official statistics show there are more than 650,000 international students in Australia and the majority of them are holding second visas.
Ms. O’Neil said that the changes in these new policies will bring many prospects, attract key workers, and minimize unnecessary risks for people living, studying and working in the country.
