Australia’s most liveable city has many jewels in its crown, but Melbourne buyer advocate Nicole Jacobs says one suburb shines brighter than the rest.
South Yarra, with its vibrant Art Deco apartments, Victorian homes and historic mansions, is one of the Victorian capital’s oldest and most desirable neighborhoods – and with good reason.

Ms Jacobs said residents of the Domain area had the privilege of “choosing the garden”, including Fawkner Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
There are also countless luxury restaurants, cafes and designer clothing stores right “on their doorstep”.
South Yarra’s central location, approximately 4km south-east of the CBD, puts residents within walking distance of the city center and the MCG. They can catch the tram to quickly reach South Melbourne and the beaches of Albert Park, Middle Park, and St Kilda.
For those who don’t mind going a little further afield, Mordialloc, a bayside suburb located about 24km south-east of the CBD, is another contender for Melbourne’s best suburb, according to Ms Jacobs.

Mordialloc’s average house price of AUD1.3 million makes it more affordable than South Yarra’s average house price of AUD2.27 million and its 4km of “clean and wide” beach “is among the best” Melbourne has to offer, she said.
“Despite being further from the centre, it offers a great lifestyle with a vibrant restaurant and cafe culture.
“Mordialloc really has a lot going for it and it’s still affordable for families.”
